There is a huge deficit in cancer treatment facility in Eastern India. Hence, a large number of cancer patients from Eastern India and neighboring country of Bangladesh regularly visit either Mumbai or Chennai for treatment and advice. It is extremely difficult for them to stay far from their native place for many months for treatment. There is a need for a treatment facility at their native place. Many patients present in advanced stage as early detection and treatment facilities are not available in majority of two tier cities.
Prof Dutta is an eminent scholar trained at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai and worked for many years at Apollo Speciality Cancer Hospital, Chennai before joining as head of the department at prestigious Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi. Bengal Cancer Foundation trust started as a small patient support facility at Kolkata in 2012. However, the need for full-fledged cancer hospital in two tier cities of West Bengal was felt soon and hence in 2018 work was started at Dr Dutta’s home town Burdwan to start a full-fleged cancer hospital. In 2022, 50 bedded full-fledged cancer hospital was started at Nababhat, Burdwan.
